Even if you shun the mainstream practice of celebrity worship, lavish plots of the famous and infamous make for honest-to-goodness juicy tourist appeal. Here then, are the most famous mausoleums in the world.

The Car Fountain

This unusual fountain set up in Rome, Italy is the work of Spanish artist Juan Galdeano who wanted to make a statement that would hopefully draw attention to the issue of global warming. The fountain was built to look like it’s sustaining a hatchback Seat Ibiza, when in reality the car is being supported by an intricate installation. Let’s face it, that would have to be quite a powerful jet of water to sustain the car. The fountain is available to the public from June 5 to August 10.

Wat Pa Maha Kaew Temple is the only temple in the world build out of glass bottles and bottle caps. It all began in 1984 when the Buddhist monks started gathering bottles to decorate their shelters. The lovely bottle art-work they created attracted more and more visitors that began donating bottles, until there were enough to build an entire building.

The world’s only pink Bottlenose dolphin which was discovered in an inland lake in Louisiana, USA, has become such an attraction that conservationists have warned tourists to leave it alone. Charter boat captain Erik Rue, 42, photographed the animal, which is actually an albino, when he began studying it after the mammal first surfaced in Lake Calcasieu, an inland saltwater estuary, north of the Gulf of Mexico in southwestern USA.

World’s Smallest Car – Peel P50

Sun, Mar 21, 2010

It might not be exactly up-to standards design-wise, but the Peel P50 is the perfect car on a crowded street. Only 50 cars were prodused and sold between 1963 and 1964, but only 20 are still around today. The original price was 200 pounds, but today you can’t buy one of these micro-cars with less than 35,000 to 50,000 pounds. The three-wheeled car has only one door on the left side, one windscreen wiper and one headlight. At 134 cm in length and 99 cm in width, the Peel P50 mini-car was designed to accomodate one adult and a shopping bag. You might not be able to ride in a micro-machine like the P50, but you will be able to observe one up close, at the Ripley’s Believe It or Not Museum, in London.

Swallow’s Nest Castle

Swallow’s Nest is an ornamental castle built in Yalta, Crimea peninsula, Ukraine, built between 1911-1912 by Russian architect Leonid Sherwood. It lies on the 130foot-high Aurora Cliff, overlooking the Black Sea. Over time it has been a restaurant, a reading club headquarters and, lately, a very popular tourist attraction. In 1927 it survived a strong earthquake (between 6 and 7 on the Richter scale) with only a few decorative elements falling in the sea, but the cliff itself developed a huge crack, so access to the Swallow’s Nest was restricted for almost 40 years. In 1968 the castle was renovated and a monolithic concrete plate console was used to strengthen the cliff.

1. Catacombs of Paris

Officially called les carrières de Paris or “the quarries of Paris,” the Catacombs of Paris is a network of underground tunnels and rooms that used to be Roman-era limestone quarries.

In the late 1700s, Paris was suffering from diseases caused by improper burials and mass graves in church cemeteries. Local authorities decided that they would remove thousands of bones and place them stacked in the abandoned underground quarries.
